Red River Early Learning Centre’s school age curriculum is designed for children aged 3.5 to 8 years of age. As a part of our unique learning community children have the opportunity to explore and grow at their own pace in an environment that feels just like home.
At Red River Early Learning Centre we offer play based, holistic learning opportunities inspired by the Waldorf and Reggio approaches to educating young children. We recognize that learning is a multi-faceted pursuit and our program focuses on the growth and development of the whole child through collaborative and individualized learning, problem solving, integrated curricula, critical thinking, arts and creativity.
But how do children learn if they’re just playing all day long?
It’s easy to embrace the idea of play as curriculum for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, but even big kids need an environment rich in playful learning experiences in order to thrive.
“Play may seem simple, yet it is profound to a child’s development. Play makes learning something that happens naturally and joyfully, when a child laughs and wonders, explores and imagines.” (The Power of Play, A Research Summary on Play and Learning)
Play and academic work are not distinct categories for children but rather deeply intertwined. For example, while working with Lego a child hones their fine motor skills, develops creativity, and practices math and problem solving skills. Lego teaches symmetry, balance, shapes and sizes. Children even learn more complex mathematical concepts such as fractions when they observe how many small pieces of Lego can fit into a larger piece … all through joyful play!
“Play nourishes every aspect of children’s development. … Play develops the foundation of intellectual, social, physical, and emotional skills necessary for success in school and in life.” (Canadian Council on Learning, 2006, p. 2)
